Gnome Desktop Scaling

Mar 2025

Introduction

After a default installation of Alma Linux 9 with the Desktop Environment, the default desktop is Gnome (at the time of writing). One of the issues with Gnome in v9 seems to be the default scaling of the desktop. I installed this on a laptop with a 2K display and everything was either too big or too small, mainly because the default scaling sizes were 100% or 200%

Gnome Fractional Scaling

I got this information from this webpage, but to save me finding it again, I have stuck it on my Wiki. Thank you to the original author(s).

Quite simply, from a terminal, you can run the following:

  gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['scale-monitor-framebuffer']"

I think you have to either reboot, or at least log out and back in.

Then when you look at displays, you have a much more granular set of scaling options.
